A block of 100 documents sounds simple. The bill depends on which edition you run, how many pages each invoice has, how many fields your schema holds and how many people administer it.
In premium edition one metered document is one page. A 4-page freight invoice is four documents, so a block of 100 documents can be as few as 25 invoices.
Premium edition includes up to 50 schema fields per document. Every extra 50 fields, or part of 50, is charged as another document, so a wide AP schema can double the page count.
The first premium tier is a fixed price for up to 5 blocks. A team that sends 60 invoices in a quiet month still pays for 500 pages.

List the header fields and line item columns you need. Over 50 in premium doubles the metered documents. If you need generative AI extraction for messy layouts, you are on premium or embedded, not base.
Workspace admins at EUR 700 a month, mailbox and workflow requests, and the integration work to post results into S/4HANA or SAP Business One. Compare that total with a flat extraction tool before you sign.
SAP Document AI is built to sit inside SAP processes. That is a strength if you run SAP end to end and a cost if you only need invoice fields in a spreadsheet.

SAP lists these rates in EUR. A US customer pays in USD at whatever conversion the order form sets, so ask your SAP account executive for the USD figure before you model a budget.

SAP's own worked examples price every block at the tier your total lands in ("cost for 10 blocks = 10 x the block price"), not a blended rate across tiers. That creates cliffs worth knowing about. At the current catalog rates, 10 blocks cost EUR 580 and 11 blocks cost EUR 440, so 1,100 pages are cheaper than 1,000. The same thing happens at 100 blocks (EUR 4,000) versus 101 blocks (EUR 2,424). If your volume sits just under a break, confirm with SAP how your contract meters it.
On base edition, an invoice of up to 3 pages costs EUR 0.20 at normal volume, falling to EUR 0.14 above 60,000 invoices a month. On premium edition, the same invoice costs EUR 0.40 to 0.58 per page below 10,000 pages a month, so a typical 1.4 page invoice runs about EUR 0.56 to 0.81 before admin seats and workflow requests.
Take a mid-sized US AP department at 3,000 vendor invoices a month averaging 1.4 pages. On base edition that is 30 blocks, or EUR 600 a month. On premium it is 4,200 pages, 42 blocks at EUR 40, or EUR 1,680 a month. Add one workspace admin at EUR 700 and a mailbox channel, and premium lands near EUR 2,400 a month, roughly EUR 29,000 a year, for extraction alone.
SAP Document AI has two ways in. The basic UI and REST APIs are what base edition uses. The workspace and OData V4 APIs, available in premium and embedded editions, add schema management, channels that read invoices from a mailbox, workflows that separate attachments and classify documents, instant learning and analytics. The workspace brings two extra meters.
SAP's own example in the help portal uses 5,000 two-page documents a month. That is 10,000 metered documents and 100 blocks. At the rate printed in that help page (EUR 60 per block) the documents alone cost EUR 6,000 a month. At today's catalog rate of EUR 40 it is EUR 4,000, which shows how much the catalog has moved and why you should price from the catalog, not an old PDF.

The hyperscaler rates look tiny because they are raw APIs. You still build the upload flow, review screen, export and ERP posting. SAP bundles more of that workflow, which narrows the gap if you would otherwise build it on BTP anyway.
Yes, but they are priced separately. SAP Vendor Invoice Management by OpenText is an invoice workflow product with its own OCR and capture licensing, while SAP Document AI is a BTP extraction service billed per block. A few limits in the SAP Help Portal change how you should batch invoices. Files can be up to 50 MB and 100 pages, and a tenant can upload 10,000 documents an hour. Base edition extracts up to 99 line items per page and up to 500 header fields per schema. Premium supports up to 500 header and line item fields per schema, but remember that anything above 50 fields is billed as extra documents. Excel invoices are capped at 1,000 rows and 49 columns.
Two practical rules follow. Keep premium schemas at or under 50 fields unless the extra fields pay for themselves. And strip cover sheets, remittance stubs and terms pages before upload, because on premium every page is money.
It is the right buy when invoices land in S/4HANA, you already hold BTP credits, and you want extraction to run inside SAP workflows with SAP support behind it. At several hundred thousand pages a month the premium rate drops to EUR 0.11 to 0.15 a page and the integration value is real.
