Short answer: Hubdoc is cheaper, and on Xero it costs nothing extra. AutoEntry costs more but reads things Hubdoc never will. Hubdoc is $12 a month standalone with unlimited documents and is included in every US Xero plan, but it only captures header fields such as supplier, date and total. AutoEntry by Sage sells credits from $13 a month for 50 up to $469 for 2,500, charges 2 credits for an invoice with line items and 3 credits per bank statement page, and publishes into QuickBooks, Xero or Sage.
So the choice comes down to one question: do your bills need their lines? If every bill posts to one account, Hubdoc wins on price and there is little reason to pay for AutoEntry. If you split bills across jobs, classes or items, or you convert bank statements, AutoEntry does the work Hubdoc leaves for a person. Below are both rate cards in US dollars, read from hubdoc.com, xero.com and autoentry.com in October 2026, four worked examples, and where a page-priced extractor fits. You can test one of your own bills in the tool at the top of this page.
Hubdoc vs AutoEntry pricing side by side
| What you pay for | Hubdoc | AutoEntry by Sage |
|---|---|---|
| Price on its own | $12 a month, unlimited documents | $13 a month for 50 credits up to $469 for 2,500 |
| Price with Xero | Included in Early ($27), Growing ($59) and Established ($97) | Same credit plans, no Xero discount |
| Pricing unit | Flat monthly fee | Credits, by document type |
| Invoice, header only | Included | 1 credit |
| Invoice with line items | Not available | 2 credits |
| Supplier statement | Not a priced feature | 2 credits |
| Bank or card statement | Not a priced feature | 3 credits per page |
| Unused allowance | Nothing to roll over | Credits roll over for 90 days |
| Ledgers | Xero, QuickBooks Online | QuickBooks, Xero, Sage |
| Trial | 30 days, no card | 25 free credits, no card |
The AutoEntry ladder in full: Bronze 50 credits for $13, Silver 100 for $24, Gold 200 for $46, Platinum 500 for $103, Diamond 1,500 for $298 and Sapphire 2,500 for $469. Every plan has unlimited users. Our AutoEntry pricing page covers the credit rules and the overdraft in detail, and the Hubdoc pricing page covers the Xero plan limits.
Is Hubdoc cheaper than AutoEntry?
Yes, at almost every volume. Standalone Hubdoc is a flat $12 a month however many documents you send, while AutoEntry rises with each credit tier, and on Xero Hubdoc adds nothing to the bill at all. AutoEntry only competes on price at very low volume: its $13 Bronze plan is a dollar more than Hubdoc for up to 50 plain bills a month.
The real comparison is not price per document, because the two tools do not capture the same data. Hubdoc's flat fee buys a header. AutoEntry's credits buy a header, or a header plus every line, or a statement converted to transactions. You are paying for depth.
Does Hubdoc or AutoEntry extract line items?
AutoEntry extracts line items and Hubdoc does not. AutoEntry captures description, quantity and unit price for each line when you choose it, at 2 credits per invoice instead of 1. Hubdoc reads the supplier, date, total, invoice number and due date, and when Xero users asked for line item capture, a Xero community manager answered that no further developments are planned.
That gap is the most common reason people move off Hubdoc. A contractor coding materials to jobs, a restaurant tracking food cost or a distributor updating item costs gets a one-line bill from Hubdoc and has to type the rest. Our Hubdoc alternative comparison prices the four tools that do read the lines.
What Hubdoc and AutoEntry cost for four real businesses
Each example is one company for one month. Bills are one page each, and "lines" means the bill needs every line coded.
| Business | Hubdoc | AutoEntry |
|---|---|---|
| Xero user, 40 bills, header only | $0 extra on Growing ($59 Xero plan) | Bronze, $13 |
| QuickBooks Online, 120 bills, header only | $12 | 120 credits, Gold, $46 |
| QuickBooks Online, 120 bills with lines | $12, plus every line typed by hand | 240 credits, Platinum, $103 |
| Year-end catch-up, 12 statements of 5 pages | No statement extraction | 180 credits, Gold, $46 for that month |
The first two rows favor Hubdoc clearly. The third is where the decision lives: 120 bills with an average of 8 lines each is 960 lines a month that someone keys after Hubdoc publishes. At even 10 seconds a line that is over 2.5 hours of data entry, and AutoEntry's extra $91 buys it back. The fourth row is AutoEntry's home ground; its statement extraction is a reason accountants keep it even when their bills are simple.
Which is better for accountants, Hubdoc or AutoEntry?
For a practice with mostly simple Xero clients, Hubdoc is better because it costs the client nothing extra and works inside Xero's own workflow. For a practice that does catch-up work, bank statement conversion or line-level coding, AutoEntry is better because it handles those document types and publishes to QuickBooks, Xero and Sage from one account.
Many firms run both. Hubdoc stays on the clients whose bills post to one account, and AutoEntry, or another tool, takes the clients whose documents need more. Pricing AutoEntry per client matters here: Sage tells accountants to buy a plan for each client company, so ten AutoEntry clients means ten allowances to size. Once the bills are in the ledger, the month-end pack is a separate job, and a tool that can turn the trial balance into financial statements saves the next round of retyping.
Is AutoEntry worth it if you already have Xero?
Only if you need what Hubdoc skips. On Xero, Hubdoc is already paid for, so AutoEntry is worth it when your bills need line items, when you convert bank or credit card statements, or when your practice also serves QuickBooks and Sage clients and wants one capture tool. For header-only bills on Xero, paying for AutoEntry buys nothing new.
Where a page-priced extractor beats both
There is one case where neither model is cheap: a business whose supplier bills are long and need every line. Hubdoc leaves the lines to a person, and AutoEntry doubles the credit price of each bill to read them. At 300 bills with lines a month, AutoEntry needs 600 credits, which is the $298 Diamond plan.
InvoiceExtractor prices by pages and includes line items on every page. Starter is $49 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for 2,500 Base AI pages, so the same 300 bills fit with room to spare. It returns the header and every line as Excel, CSV, JSON, a Xero bill import or a QuickBooks import file, and you can extract invoice line items or convert PDF invoices into a Xero bill import directly. The trade-off is honest: it does not publish into your ledger for you, it does not run approvals, and plans are single seat. If those matter more than the lines, stay with AutoEntry.
| 300 bills with lines a month | Monthly cost | What you still do by hand |
|---|---|---|
| Hubdoc | $12, or $0 extra on Xero | Type about 2,400 lines |
| AutoEntry | $298 (Diamond) | Review and publish |
| InvoiceExtractor | $49, or $24 billed yearly | Import the file into Xero or QuickBooks |
How to choose between Hubdoc and AutoEntry
Pull last month's documents and count three things: plain bills and receipts, bills that need their lines, and bank statement pages. If the last two are close to zero, use Hubdoc; it is free on Xero and $12 elsewhere. If statements are the bulk of the work, AutoEntry's 3-credit statement rate is the main thing you are buying. If line-heavy bills are the bulk, compare AutoEntry's 2-credit rate with a page-priced extractor, and upload your longest supplier bill at the top of this page to see the line table it returns.
