Extend bills everything in credits. Each API burns a set number of credits per page, and your plan decides what a credit costs: $0.0125 on Pay As You Go, $0.01 on Scale, and a negotiated rate on Enterprise. The catch for invoice work is that Parse runs automatically in front of Extract, Split and Classify, and Extend's own documentation says the all-in cost per page is the sum of the operation and its parse. So Extract is not 3 credits a page. It is 5.

Credit counts come from the "How Credits Work" page in Extend's documentation, including its worked example of a 10-page Split and Extract workflow that consumes 70 credits. Dollar figures are those credits multiplied by the per-credit rate on extend.ai/pricing. Scale also has a $500 monthly platform fee that covers its first 50,000 credits, so the Scale column only applies once you are on that plan.

How much does Extend cost per invoice?

A one-page invoice run through Performance Extract costs 5 credits, which is 6.25 cents on Pay As You Go and 5 cents on Scale. Light Extract costs 1.2 credits, or 1.5 cents. Most US vendor invoices are one or two pages, but freight bills, utility statements and construction pay applications often run three to six, and every page is metered separately.

The mode choice matters more than the plan. Light is about four times cheaper, and Extend itself suggests pairing Performance Parse with scanned pages and Light for clean, born-digital files. For an AP team the honest question is how many of your vendors still send scans, phone photos or faxed PDFs, because those are the pages where Light is most likely to miss a line.

The table below prices an invoice workload three ways on Extend and puts it next to a flat invoice extraction plan. The Extend numbers assume no Review Agent, no splitting and no agentic corrections, which is the cheapest realistic setup.

The first 10,000 credits on a new Extend account are free, which covers 2,000 pages of Performance Extract or roughly 8,300 pages of Light Extract. That is a genuinely useful pilot allowance. It is a one-time grant, not a monthly one, so it does not change the run-rate above.

Extend vs Reducto, AWS Textract and Azure for invoice extraction

Extend competes with other developer document APIs, so a buyer usually prices two or three of them side by side. Here is what one invoice page costs on each at list price, using the product that actually returns fields.

On list price alone, Performance Extract is the most expensive invoice option in this group, about six times Textract Analyze Expense and three times Reducto Extract. Light Extract lands between Textract and Reducto. What the table cannot show is quality: Extend and Reducto each publish comparison pages that favor themselves, and neither is an independent test. Run your own vendors' invoices through both before you let a leaderboard decide.

What sits outside the Extend meter

The per-credit number is the smaller part of the bill for most finance teams. Extend returns JSON to software you own. Everything between that JSON and a posted bill in QuickBooks, NetSuite, Sage Intacct or Xero is a build: the upload screen, a queue where someone checks low-confidence fields, duplicate detection, vendor matching, GL coding and the export itself. Extend does ship Studio, workflows and a human-in-the-loop review screen on every plan, which narrows that gap for technical teams, but somebody still has to design the schema, test it on your vendors and maintain it when a supplier changes its template.

There are also the plan-level items. The Business Associate Agreement is not available on Pay As You Go, it is an add-on on Scale and included on Enterprise, so a US healthcare billing team is on at least a $500 monthly plan before it processes a page. SSO, SAML and advanced role controls are Enterprise only. Pay As You Go has limited rate limits and chat support.

When Extend is the right buy

Extend earns its price when you are building a product, not closing the books. A lending platform that classifies, splits and extracts 40 document types from loan packets, an insurer routing claims, or a software company embedding document intake inside its own app all need a configurable pipeline, custom schemas, evals and an audit trail on every run. For those teams $50 per 1,000 pages is cheap relative to the engineering it replaces, and Light mode gives a cheaper lane for clean documents.

It is the wrong buy when the job is a few thousand vendor invoices a month that need to land in a spreadsheet or an accounting import by Friday. In that case you are paying for flexibility you will not use and taking on a build you did not plan for.
