Short answer: ABBYY FlexiCapture is roughly 2.7 times cheaper per page than UiPath Document Understanding at the entry tier. ABBYY's published US price list puts 50,000 pages a year at $3,740, which is $74.80 per 1,000 pages. UiPath's public federal price list puts 40,000 pages at $8,000, which is $200 per 1,000 pages. ABBYY wins the per-page number and then takes most of the advantage back with a three-year minimum term, so the cheaper product carries the larger cheque on day one.
Both vendors are unusual in the same way: neither publishes a price on its own website, and both have had a real USD rate card leak into the public record through procurement channels. That makes this one of the few enterprise capture comparisons that can be done with actual numbers instead of analyst estimates.
The two rate cards, side by side
These are not identical products and the volumes on offer do not line up exactly, so the honest comparison is cost per 1,000 pages at the smallest bundle each vendor sells.
| Volume | UiPath Document Understanding | Per 1,000 pages | ABBYY FlexiCapture | Per 1,000 pages |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entry bundle | 40,000 pages, $8,000/yr | $200.00 | 50,000 pages, $3,740/yr | $74.80 |
| 100,000 pages | Not a listed bundle | n/a | $6,660/yr | $66.60 |
| 200,000 pages | Not a listed bundle | n/a | $10,910/yr | $54.55 |
| 500,000 pages | Not a listed bundle | n/a | $19,630/yr | $39.26 |
| 1,000,000 pages | $150,000/yr | $150.00 | $32,260/yr | $32.26 |
| 10,000,000 pages | $1,000,000/yr | $100.00 | Not a listed tier | n/a |
The gap widens with volume rather than closing. At a million pages a year ABBYY is $32.26 per 1,000 against UiPath's $150.00, which is 4.6 times. UiPath's volume discount is real but shallow: it only halves, from $200 to $100 per 1,000, across a 250x increase in volume. ABBYY's list drops by 57% between 50,000 and a million pages.
Where these numbers come from
The UiPath figures come from a public GSA Pricebook, where Document Understanding is sold as a page bundle SKU. The 40,000 page bundle carries a commercial list price of $8,000 and a GSA price of $7,839.60, and the cloud twin of the SKU carries the same two numbers. Federal price lists have to be published, which is why a company that shows no pricing page still has a rate card in the public record.
The ABBYY figures come from a US price list posted publicly as a PDF by an industry analyst firm. It is dated 2021, which matters and should be stated plainly: it is the most recent real ABBYY USD list price available publicly, not a current quote. Treat it as a reliable indication of structure and relative scale, and expect the absolute numbers to have moved. We keep the full breakdown on our ABBYY FlexiCapture pricing page, alongside the UiPath Document Understanding rate card.
The three-year minimum changes the answer
ABBYY FlexiCapture Business Subscription carries a three-year minimum term. So the entry decision is not $3,740, it is $11,220 committed before a single invoice is processed. UiPath's bundle is annual. For a team that wants to prove the concept for twelve months, UiPath's $8,000 is the smaller commitment even though its per-page rate is 2.7 times worse.
| UiPath DU 40K bundle | ABBYY FlexiCapture 50K | |
|---|---|---|
| Year one cash | $8,000 | $3,740 |
| Minimum term | 1 year | 3 years |
| Total minimum commitment | $8,000 | $11,220 |
| Pages included over the term | 40,000 | 150,000 |
| Effective cost per 1,000 pages over the term | $200.00 | $74.80 |
Read the last two rows together. ABBYY costs 40% more to commit to and delivers 3.75 times the pages. If you are confident about volume, that is a straightforward win. If you are not, the three-year term is exactly the risk it looks like.
What the headline price leaves out on each side
Neither number is the cost of a working system, and they are incomplete in different ways.
UiPath's bundle does not run on its own. Document Understanding is a consumption SKU inside a platform. To use it you also need Studio to build the automation, Orchestrator to run it, and at least one robot licence. On the same federal price list an unattended robot is $8,000 and an AI Robot is $9,000, so the practical floor is roughly double the bundle price before anyone processes an invoice. Budgeting the $8,000 alone is the single most common mistake in a UiPath evaluation.
ABBYY's list is a menu of percentage add-ons. Development, test and backup environments add 20%. Mobile Capture adds 20%. Timeline adds 25%. Enterprise support adds 15% and carries a $50,000 minimum annual commitment of its own. Stack all of them and the list price rises by 85%. The transaction-based Processing Capacity variant sits exactly 20% above the subscription price at every tier, a consistency that suggests these are genuine list mechanics rather than one-off negotiated numbers.
Is ABBYY Vantage the same thing as FlexiCapture?
No, and the pricing is very different. Vantage is ABBYY's cloud-native capture platform and it is sold separately: Vantage Core lists at $8,000 for 50,000 page transactions, against $3,740 for the same volume on FlexiCapture. The pre-trained Invoice Skill sits exactly 25% above Core at every tier, so 50,000 pages with invoice extraction is $10,000. ABBYY markets the two products as complementary rather than as a succession, and FlexiCapture 12 remains current with no published end-of-life date.
One lifecycle fact belongs in any Vantage evaluation: Vantage 2.7 in the Cloud was decommissioned on 31 August 2026. ABBYY has retired several adjacent products on a steady cadence, including FlexiCapture 11 in January 2023, the FlexiCapture Engine in October 2024 and the OCR Container in February 2026. Ask directly about the support horizon for whatever version you are quoted.
Which one should you actually shortlist?
The two products answer different questions, and the price difference partly reflects that.
| Choose | When |
|---|---|
| UiPath Document Understanding | You already run a UiPath RPA program, the licences and the skills are in place, and reading documents is one step inside a longer automation that also clicks through screens and moves data between systems. |
| ABBYY FlexiCapture | Document capture is the project, volumes are known and steady, you need per-page economics that survive scale, and a three-year commitment is acceptable. |
| Neither | You process a few hundred to a few thousand invoices a month, you want structured data out of PDFs without a platform, and a five-figure minimum commitment is not proportionate to the problem. |
That last row is not a throwaway. Both of these products are priced for organizations with a capture programme and a project team. A mid-sized AP department with 800 invoices a month is around 10,000 pages a year, which is a quarter of UiPath's smallest bundle and a fifth of ABBYY's, and neither vendor sells anything smaller.
How much does enterprise invoice capture cost per invoice?
Divide the bundle by the pages and add the platform. At UiPath's entry tier the extraction step alone is $0.20 a page before robots and Studio; at ABBYY's it is about $0.075 a page before add-ons and implementation. Both sit well inside the range that makes sense at volume, and both look absurd at low volume, because the fixed commitment dominates. APQC benchmarks put the fully loaded cost of processing an invoice at roughly $2 in the top quartile, about $6 at the median, and $10 or more in the bottom quartile, so licence cost is a small share of the total either way. What moves the fully loaded number is how much retyping the process still requires.
That is the part worth measuring before you sign anything. If your team is still opening PDFs to key line items, the fix is extraction, and it does not require a platform decision to test. You can run a batch of your own invoices through our invoice data extraction software and get structured line items back as Excel or CSV, then see how much of your invoice coding work actually disappears once the line detail arrives automatically. If the answer is most of it, you have learned something useful about which problem you are buying a solution to. Whatever you conclude, you will end up presenting the comparison to a committee, and it is worth turning the cost model into a short deck rather than emailing a spreadsheet nobody opens.
The bottom line
On published list prices ABBYY FlexiCapture is materially cheaper per page than UiPath Document Understanding, by 2.7 times at entry volume and 4.6 times at a million pages a year. UiPath's advantage is not price, it is that the extraction sits inside an automation platform you may already own, which can make the marginal cost of adding document understanding lower than the sticker suggests. ABBYY's disadvantage is the three-year minimum and an add-on structure that can inflate the list by 85%. Get both quotes in writing with the add-ons itemized, and make each vendor state the total three-year cost rather than the first-year price.
