Short answer: for invoices only, the cheapest Unstract alternatives are the cloud OCR APIs that already ship an invoice model: Mistral Document AI at $5 per 1,000 pages, and AWS Textract Analyze Expense or the Azure Document Intelligence prebuilt invoice model at $10 per 1,000 pages. Unstract Starter costs about $100 per 1,000 pages before you pay for the LLM. If nobody on your team writes code, a finished invoice extractor from $49 a month is the shortest path to clean data.
Unstract is a solid platform. It is open source under AGPL-3.0, it lets you define any schema in Prompt Studio, and it can push results into a database or warehouse as an ETL pipeline. Those strengths matter when you process contracts, loan packets and insurance forms side by side. An accounts payable team has a narrower question: we have vendor invoices, we need the header fields and line items in a spreadsheet or the ERP, and we want to know whether Unstract is the right price for that one job. If you want to see the output first, drop a sample invoice into the uploader at the top of this page.
What Unstract costs for invoices
Unstract prices by page processed. The self-serve plans on its pricing page are:
- Starter: $499 a month for 5,000 pages, or $416 a month billed yearly. Overage $0.10 a page.
- Growth: $2,249 a month for 25,000 pages, or $1,874 a month billed yearly. Overage $0.09 a page.
- Enterprise: quote only. This is the only tier with SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, ISO 27001, SSO and a 99.9 percent SLA.
The part that surprises buyers is the model. The 14-day trial bundles GPT-4o with 1M tokens, but after that you connect your own LLM account, so OpenAI, Anthropic or your cloud provider bills every extraction on top of the page fee. On a typical one-page invoice that adds roughly $1.40 to $9 per 1,000 pages depending on the model, more if each field runs as its own prompt. We worked through every tier, the yearly discount (closer to 17 percent than the advertised 25) and the LLMWhisperer rates on the Unstract pricing breakdown.
Unstract alternatives for invoice extraction, priced side by side
Each price is the published US list rate for the product that returns structured invoice fields, not the cheapest text-reading meter each vendor sells.
| Option | Product for invoice fields | Per 1,000 pages | Code required | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unstract (baseline) | Starter plan, your own LLM | $99.80 plus LLM tokens | Prompts and deployment | Many document types, pipelines |
| Mistral | Document AI annotations | $5.00 | Yes | Developers on a tight budget |
| AWS Textract | Analyze Expense | $10.00, $8.00 above 1M a month | Yes | Teams already on AWS |
| Azure Document Intelligence | Prebuilt invoice model | $10.00, from $7.50 on commitment tiers | Yes | Microsoft shops, air-gapped options |
| LlamaExtract | Cost-effective tier | $10.00 ($31.25 Agentic) | Yes | Teams already on LlamaCloud |
| Reducto | Extract | $20.00 | Yes | Complex layouts, RAG pipelines |
| InvoiceExtractor | Finished invoice extractor | $14.90 on Plus, model included | No | AP teams that want results today |
The API rows look cheap, and per page they are. What they leave out is everything between the JSON and your ledger: an upload path, a review screen for low-confidence fields, line-item tables mapped to your columns, and an export your accounting system accepts. Unstract gives you more of that scaffolding than a raw API does. A finished invoice tool gives you all of it for invoices and nothing for other document types.
Is Unstract worth it for invoice extraction?
Unstract is worth it when invoices are one of several document types you need to structure, or when your data cannot leave your own cloud account. For an invoice-only workload under about 20,000 pages a month, it is usually not the cheapest route, because the $499 floor and the separate LLM bill buy platform features an AP team does not use.
Work it through for a firm processing 1,500 invoices a month at an average of 1.4 pages, about 2,100 pages. On Unstract Starter that is $499 a month plus an LLM bill of a few dollars, and 2,900 pages of paid capacity sit unused. The same volume fits on a $49 plan with 2,500 pages. Over a year the gap is about $5,400, before anyone counts the hours spent writing and testing prompts.
The picture changes at the other end. A data team that needs invoices, bank statements and purchase contracts flowing into one warehouse would have to stitch several single-purpose tools together, and then keep that warehouse honest by monitoring the loaded tables for freshness and schema drift. Unstract handles the extraction half of that in one place, and its price reflects it.
What is the cheapest alternative to Unstract?
The cheapest alternative to Unstract for invoices is Mistral Document AI at $5 per 1,000 pages, or $2 with batch processing on the OCR endpoint. It is an API, so you write the schema, the upload code and the export yourself. For a team without a developer, the cheapest complete option is a flat invoice plan where the model and the export are already included.
Be careful with "free" self-hosting as the cheapest route. The AGPL edition of Unstract has no page fee, but you still pay for the LLM, the servers, a vector database and the person who keeps it patched. AGPL also requires you to share your changes if you offer a modified version to users over a network. That is fine for many teams, but it is a legal review, not a zero.
Which Unstract alternative handles line items best?
Line items are where invoice tools separate. Independent testing on scanned invoices by BusinesswareTech in January 2025 found Azure Document Intelligence reading 87 percent of line items correctly and AWS Textract 82 percent, while GPT-4o with third-party OCR reached 98 percent on header fields but only 57 percent on line items. LLM-based platforms, Unstract included, inherit that pattern: strong on headers, uneven on long tables unless the prompts and parsing mode are tuned.
If your bills run to many lines, as freight, utility and distributor invoices do, test with your longest real invoices before you commit. On Unstract that means the $15 per 1,000 pages Form and Table mode in LLMWhisperer plus a line-item prompt. On a finished tool it means uploading the file and checking that the lines add up to the total. Our invoice line item extraction page shows the columns we return and how the totals check works.
How to choose between Unstract and an invoice-only tool
Three questions settle it for most teams.
- How many document types do you process? One or two, mostly invoices: an invoice-only tool. Five or more with shared downstream systems: a platform like Unstract.
- Who will own the prompts? If there is no engineer who wants to write, version and retest extraction prompts every time a vendor changes its layout, the platform cost is higher than the page fee suggests.
- Where must the data live? If documents cannot leave your VPC, Unstract On-Prem Enterprise or the AGPL edition is a real advantage, and a cloud-only tool is ruled out.
If you are also pricing the developer-first platforms that usually sit on the same shortlist, our Reducto alternatives for invoices and LlamaParse pricing per page use the same per-1,000-page method, so the numbers line up with the table above.
The bottom line
Unstract is a capable, open, developer-friendly extraction platform, and for multi-document pipelines or self-hosted deployments it earns its price. For vendor invoices going into Excel, CSV or QuickBooks, you are paying $499 a month plus an LLM bill for flexibility you will not use. Start with the job you actually have: upload a few of your hardest invoices to the extractor at the top of this page, check the line items against the totals, and compare that with the InvoiceExtractor plans before signing anything annual.
